Heather Rutherford

Grant Writer | Executive Board
2024 & 2025

What are your current projects and/or responsibilities as a board member?

My current job duties are co-directing the Youth Summer Theatre Program and I am also head of the Costume Room Committee. In addition to those tasks, I am always looking for new grants to get us more money!

What experience do you bring to the board?

Grant writing started becoming profitable for my classroom and the schools where I taught when I was an elementary school teacher. At the time I was focusing mostly on science and environmental education grants. With each grant writing attempt, I continue to learn and hopefully improve my abilities. I am proud to help Lake Plains Players find various ways to increase funding for our performing arts program.

Before I was even ten years old, I had already started choreographing dances for myself and my friends. While in junior high school, adults began entrusting me to choreograph musicals at both Lyndonville and Albion Schools. I realized choreographing school musicals and glee club performances was one of my favorite parts of teaching. There are now at least 30 different shows at various locations that have my dance experience reflected in the performances. Some of my favorite choreography memories have been with "Pirates of Penzance Jr.", "Mamma Mia!", and "The Drowsy Chaperone". When parents tell me that they had "no idea my child could perform like that on stage", those are my absolute favorite moments as a choreographer. I love helping others discover the wonderful world of musical theatre.

When did you first start working with LPP?

My first show with LPP was Evita in 1988.
